In response to the U.S. House of Representatives declaration in 2006 designating September as "Infant Mortality Awareness Month" on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, State Rep. James J. O'Day held a press conference at the offices of the Worcester Healthy Start Initiative (WHSI) to acknowledge the work being done by WHSI and to read a citation proclaiming September as "Infant Mortality Awareness Month" in our state.

Babies need to bulk up
Healthy Start Initiative addresses low birth weight in Worcester County

While infant mortality rates have declined with advances in medical care, one important indicator of a baby's health hasn't improved. Babies born in Central Massachusetts are as likely to be underweight as they were eight years ago, according to state figures.

The rate at which infants die in Worcester has raised concerns among stakeholders over the past many years. The Worcester Infant Mortality Reduction Task Force which consists of representatives from local and state agencies, concerned physicians, social workers and other professionals was convened in the mid 1990's to address the soaring rates. Among several initiatives that have been taken, the WIMRTF has worked closely with the Worcester Healthy Start Initiative, a federally funded program with the aim to reduce infant mortality in the city.

Worcester Infant Mortality Rates - Still a problem

Data released recently by the MA Dept. of Public Health (MDPH) stresses the need for interventions to reduce infant mortality. Although, for Worcester the infant mortality rate of 5.0 per 1,000 live births was almost equivalent to the State's rate of 4.8/1000 live births for 2006, a closer look at the trend for the past 10 years indicates a persistently high infant mortality rate for the city.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) today released the 2006 Birth Report which shows the Caesarean section delivery rate rose for the eighth straight year to an all-time high of 33.4 percent of all births in Massachusetts.

Fighting Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities, a pronounced problem in Worcester

The Worcester Healthy Start Initiative (WHSI) acknowledges and deeply appreciates the attention being given to the problem of racial health disparities by the Patrick Administration. In a press release dated November 28, 2007, the administration awarded a $1 Million in grants to fight racial and ethnic health disparities. The Governor further noted that "eliminating racial and ethnic health disparities is a major priority for our administration".

WIMRTF Infant Mortality Report Presented to The Mayor's Office Worcester

The past Spring, the City Council asked the Worcester Infant Mortality Reduction Task Force to prepare a report on infant mortality rates for the city of Worcester since the Massachusetts Department of Public Health had released data indicating that Worcester's rates had doubled from 2004 to 2005. In response to the City Council request, we are dividing this report into four sections:

  • Statistics on infant mortality rates from 1990 through 2005 for Worcester, Massachusetts, and the United States;
  • The interpretation of the existing data and the Task Force's plans for future work on this topic;
  • The progress of the Worcester Infant Mortality Reduction Task Force to date in understanding the complicated factors that contribute to these figures; and
  • Recommendations for the City Council to consider in addressing this topic as a public health issue for the city.

Prenatal clinic joins the battle

WORCESTER - The city's newest prenatal clinic opened last month, welcoming women for care that can make a difference in their babies' lives. Making that care easy to come by is the mission of St. Vincent Hospital's Family Assistance Program - Prenatal Care Clinic, which joins other health-care providers in the city dedicated to lowering infant mortality rates.
